Electric Hand Planers - A Basic Guide

Electric hand tool machines are used to level, plane and smooth the surfaces of flat lumber or thick wood that simply would not fit into a traditional thickness plan machine. These machines can also be used to cut profiles, joinery and router work, just to name a few things they can be used for. If you have ever laid concrete, poured a concrete slab or sanded and polished an exterior wood surface you probably used a thickness plan machine. These devices come in many sizes and shapes, but most are considered manual equipment because you manually operate them to make the needed cuts. Here is a look at how these machines are classified according to their uses.

The first type of electric hand planers are known as electric planers. They are similar to the powered pencils and other small power tools that are used for basic woodworking projects. These planers come with either a corded or cordless design and function by means of an electric motor that causes the device to vibrate, which drills, cuts or sands the wood to the desired cutting width. Some also include a dust collector to eliminate irritating dust particles. They generally take a very long time to run and are not appropriate for light duty work.

A next type of electric planer is known as the depth gauging hand planers. These are generally much larger than the cordless version and are much more powerful. The reason for this is because they are capable of measuring both the depth of the wood and the width. Most of these units are equipped with both a dust collector and a dust extractor.

Another design option for these hand tools is the two pass and three-pass systems. The two-pass system allows the user to set the cutting depth and width capabilities. If one pass is not sufficient then it can be increased. The three-pass system allows the user to cut on either side of the material by means of a rotating drum. The user is able to change the cutting depth and width capabilities from one step to the next.

One added benefit of using electric hand planers is that they can be fitted with a depth gauging device. The depth gauges will vary in width depending on the diameter of the router bits being used. click here of the two and three passes systems have an adjustable cutter depth setting that offers the user a maximum cutting depth and width capability. When the machine is powered on and the fence is set to the desired cutting depth and width, the machine does the rest. The user manually has to turn the handle to adjust the cutter depth and width.

Electric hand planers are often equipped with a pre-installed electric cutterhead. The pre-installed cutter head allows the user to manually control the depth and width of the cut with greater accuracy than would be possible without the pre-installed cutterhead. This feature is especially helpful when the wood being cut is of a thicker variety than the pre-installed cutterhead would be able to handle. Another benefit of having the pre-installed electric cutterhead is that it can also be adjusted during the process for a more precise end result. The electric razor sharpener also works as an expansion jointing tool for smoother cutting and added strength to the cut.

Electric planers come in both cordless and corded varieties. Cordless hand tool planers are usually small in size and can be carried around the house on the owner's belt. The user controls the thickness of the planer through a switch on the machine. On the other hand, corded planers are often used in workshops or large production facilities where the operator needs more accuracy with the angles of the jointers.

Electric planers have a dust collection vent to prevent the use of excessive amounts of dust while working. It should be noted that the vent cannot be removed so care should be taken to ensure no dust particles get trapped inside. The depth adjustment knob controls the depth of the cutter, which is useful for cutting narrow materials or those with fine edges.
